I cannot imagine why anybody would want to read my autobiography but I keep being asked so this is part one: Childhood, the Making of an Author. I urge you to read my other books first, they are much funnier and better written than this poor missive!

I remember another incident much later on with Mr Griffiths. I sort of invented skiving off in about the third year but right back in the first year I stopped going to Geography. I hadn’t done a project as it was homework so as the teacher was very scary I hid in the toilets then I didn’t like to go back the following lesson and the more I stayed away the more the consequences piled up so the more I stayed away. I stayed away until the Fifth Form and then tragedy happened, Mrs Dark the teacher I was staying away from was tasked to write a report on me. She professed to having no idea who I was and I received the long awaited summons to Mr Griffith’s study.

He was standing there reading the report with a stunned expression on his face.

‘Walker,’ he said and now I knew I was in real trouble if he was calling me Walker.

‘Good Morning sir, and isn’t it a lovely one?’ I tried. He gave me a look.

‘You have been cutting Mrs Dark’s Geography lessons since the first year, correct?’

‘Spot on, sir,’ said I with nothing to lose.

‘I see. Well, as far as I can work out that means you have cut somewhere in the region of 348 lessons, yes?’

‘I can’t really help you there sir, I’m not very good at maths.’ I thought it better not to tell him I had recently been cutting Maths lessons as well.

‘Well, Nicknack…Walker,’ he said clutching at his forehead, ‘this leaves me with a bit of a problem. You see if a pupil cuts one lesson, they are made to copy up the whole lesson during detention.’

‘Seems fair enough to me, sir.’

‘Nicknack, shut up!’ he shouted losing it. He took a deep breath to bring himself back under control and after a minute continued in a more level tone, ‘For two lessons they are given the cane. For three they are put on home report.’ He lost it and started to dance around at this point, ‘I don’t know what the hell I am supposed to do about 348!!!’

I couldn’t think of anything to say that would improve the situation at this point. Now he seemed to have some sort of stroke and I watched him anxiously as he leaned over his desk fighting for breath, after all he wasn’t getting any younger. Gradually his bright red colour faded and he raised a trembling hand and pointed it at the door:

‘Go away you horrible boy!’

Like I said we all liked Mr Griffiths!

Peter wasn’t wrong. The minute the people carrier dropped them at the private security desk two of the guards came for him. They demanded his name even though they were very well aware who he was then marched him off to a private room. Butch gripped Getz’s arm above the elbow, ‘Steady,’ he murmured. ‘We don’t want to miss the flight altogether.’ She took a deep breath and after a full five seconds she gave a reluctant nod. Getz adored Peter and was liable to take issue with anyone who treated him with less than respect. But Butch was pissed off with their attitude as well. He stepped forward into the metal detector frame and immediately the alarm went off.

‘Are you wearing anything metal?’ asked the security man.

‘Yes,’ he said.

‘Would you take it off?’

‘Certainly,’ said Butch and he casually pulled up his pants leg and before they could stop him he had slid off his false leg and tossed it onto the conveyor belt. He hopped forward but still the alarm went off.

‘Oh sorry,’ he said to the aghast faces now all gathering around. ‘I forgot.’ He rolled up his sleeve and did the same with his false arm. Only half of Butch now seemed to remain and the security staff didn’t want to touch him or stop him and so he hopped forward again and to their horror the alarm went off again.

‘Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!’ Butch waved his remaining arm at them all then wrapped it around his head and gave it a jerk and at the same time Getz made a clicking sound with her tongue as though it had come loose. The security staff looked as though they were about to faint at the idea of him removing his own head but then Butch sort of froze and gave his face an idiot slap. He reached for the chain around his neck and slung it into one of the plastic trays on the conveyor belt. This time to everybody’s great relief the alarm let him through and he gave them all a friendly smile and stood there balancing on his one leg as they fought to get his false limbs back to him…and right at the back, unnoticed, Shelley gave Kamal a nudge:

‘Give me a leg up Kammy,’ she indicated the electrical conduit pipe than ran above their heads right over the whole security set up. He baulked at first but he was so often her partner in crime that almost immediately he went down on one knee. Shelley stepped from his bent knee, to his shoulders and even his head before she could reach the pipe above her and she disappeared upwards way above the heads of everybody else. Most of the kids had seen her so they kept their heads studiously down but all of the security staff had been fixated on the amazing sight of Butch and his vanishing limbs.

The other children made their way through with no trouble and started checking the bags back onto the large trolley. Bobby who had very deliberately avoided seeing Shelly’s disappearing act was sending the bags through from the other side but that was a misnomer because she had a totally devoted young man doing absolutely all the work for her. Above their heads Shelly worked her way along the pipe hand over hand and foot over foot like a gecko and below them all the Webb family pretended she didn’t exist.

‘What are you doing here, Peter?’ she asked quietly.

‘Don’t be silly,’ he said. ‘You know you don’t want to go to Australia.’

‘What?’ She gave a vast sigh of exasperation, ‘I think this is a little late, don’t you?’

‘No, come on,’ he nodded back over his shoulder. ‘I’ve got the car.’

‘Have you gone mad or what?’ she demanded. ‘I am leaving on a plane in under ten minutes time and I won’t be back for at least six months!’

‘Stop pratting around Bobby, you know you’re going to come back with me.’

‘I do not! Nothing you can say will stop me leaving! Do you understand that Peter Webb? Nothing!’

‘How about: I love you?’

‘Oh you bastard!’ She had been speaking quietly so the press wouldn’t hear but now her voice rose in indignation, ‘You bastard! How dare you?’ And breaking the habit of a lifetime she brought her hand round in a stinging slap that made even people in the crowd wince. Peter didn’t flinch. He sighed and ducked forward, flicked her over his shoulder and stood up again.

‘How dare you! How dare you!’ Her voice rose to a shout and she started to struggle, ‘get your hands off me you great bully!’ Peter was at least twice the weight of her and half a dozen times stronger but even he had trouble keeping the furiously kicking Bobby in place.

He turned and faced the director, ‘I really am sorry, Wes,’ he said. ‘Penelope Cruz, that’s your girl.’ And ignoring the howls of outrage from Bobby he walked down the steps and through the crowd.

No one tried to stop him. No one at all! Whether it was just his fame, or his size, or because people thought it was a publicity stunt, they all just parted in front of him, like a sea. He reached the Ferrari and of course everybody was surging after them, photographers were frantically running their fast forward motors hot, and the two TV camera crews were almost coming to blows over the best position in which to capture this fabulous incident.

Suddenly everyone became still as Peter gently eased her back to the ground. She stood there, her face white with anger for about half a second then she unleashed a slap that made the crowd gasp. There was a five second silence then she did exactly the same thing in exactly the same place. Peter leaned forward and kissed her. She didn’t kiss him back, just stood there like a rag doll letting him kiss her. He straightened up and gave her his half smile and she slapped him again. He nodded as though he quite understood then he opened the passenger door and offered her the seat.

Bobby eyed him coldly for a very long moment, then still with a livid look on her face she stepped into the car and sat down. Peter closed the door courteously and turned to walk around the front of the car, everyone applauded and he gave them a little bow which made Bobby even more furious.

The Ferrari roared off, the two occupants staring straight ahead.

The director made as if to go after them, before he realized what he was doing. ‘Oh shit!’ he said.

Kiss Mommy Goodbye is a major new novel from bestselling author Nicholas Walker. Peter Webb is a rock superstar living in California who has everything, but his failing relationships with women leave him hankering back to when he was a simple schoolteacher and on a whim he adopts a fourteen year old girl. Getz, was removed from abusive parents and placed with foster parents and when the story starts it has just been discovered that the foster Father has been sexually assaulting her for the last three years. She has become a highly disturbed young girl who cannot stand any male touching her in any way, she steals cars and attacks people and completely distrusts Peter’s motives in fostering her. Her only passion is the saxophone which has become a surrogate parent and she is mentally unable to be parted from it for even a second. The story goes on to relate how their music brings them closer and Getz becomes his real daughter in the most important sense of the word. Peter is then presented very suddenly with twin girl orphans from Iraq, who everybody resents, including Getz but it’s only with her help that they finally fit into the family. Peter goes on to adopt Butch, a crippled refugee from Bosnia, then the two sons of an Afghan suicide bomber, an American girl who is total drug addict, then finally his own daughter comes to live with them when Peter’s ex-wife dies. The story is one of strong but very different characters who all have severe problems but who all come to support one another through the many family crises. They have to cope with the suicide attempt of Getz, the drug addiction of Ally, the problems with the police and the school, the death of one of the children and the pressures of the press and rock concerts and Oscar ceremonies. The characters are introduced through the medium of a television program which interviews the children of famous parents. Each character is first spoken to by the interviewer before being inserted into the main storyline. It is not a case of telling each individual’s story, more how their acceptance into the family effects everybody’s life. This heart-warming story is full of both humor and sadness with stunning insights into the normalcy of the lives of the super-rich.
